Wool Scale Index

A standard for measuring light fastness that shows tints as well as mass tone. This is important since we rarely use colors full strength but mix them. In mixtures many colors have different light fastness than in full strength, While a small number of colors are stronger in tint than mass tone the majority where there is a difference are poorer, in some cases dramatically so. To measure these differences samples are tested at full strength but also in mixtures with white, the palest tint being 5% On a scale where 6 is considered the borderline of fugitive many artists organic reds and yellows are as poor as 4 at this tint. If your preferred paint shows Wool Scale ratings don’t purchase any that are 6 or lower if you want your work to last.
