Water based paints diluted with water and applied with soft brushes onto paper. A popular medium widely used in the arts.
Transparent watercolors in a form familiar to us have been around since the time of Durer. Water based colors before then tended to be more like poster colors, opacity being a valued quality. It was in the early days of book printing which had illustrations of woodcuts that were tinted with transparent colors. These were the colors Durer used, his teacher was making illustrations for the Nurumberg Chronicle. Soon English artists like Paul Sandby were using the transparent colors for landscapes. They were prized for delicate effects and as the ideal outdoor sketching medium. Nowadays watercolors are widely available in tubes, and an entire industry producing special watercolor papers brushes and paraphernalia.
