A form of Printmaking and an intaglio printmaking process process that uses ultraviolet light (often just the sun, hence the name) to harden a light sensitive ground to produce etching-like plates for printing. Often used where there are concerns for safety around strong acids, but this seems a poor reason to choose a technique. In fact Solar Plate Printmaking is capable of fine rendition of full tone photographic and hand drawn images and has several advantages as a printmaking medium. It is significantly faster than traditional printmaking methods, and does not require the multiple steps associated with older techniques. On the downside some types of solar plates are not easily reworked after making the initial image, and so it is not so simple to refine images as the first proofs are pulled.
