A scutch hammer, is a small single hand held hammer that has a square head on one side and a metal comb, or metal teeth on the other. It is used when doing masonary work. In particular is it used readily by stonemasons and stone sculptors.
A scutch hammer is used to firmly but gently chip away at stone. A scutch hammer will leave faint claw marks when used on stone. These visible marks are often a desirable effect for decortative sandstone buildings, walls and sandstone sculptures.
TIP: The metal comb of a scutch hammer, will become blunt with use, they can be changed, so when buying a sutch hammer be sure to buy several spare combs.
