Sculptures are 3 dimensional art works, characterised by form and volume. Commonly they are either, formed, carved or assembled.
Traditionally sculpture materials are often hard and durable substances such as bronze, granite and marble. However as time has passed more modern methods and materials have evolved and almost any material that can be formed, carved, or assembled by a sculptor may be used. Some materials now used for sculpture include: Sandstone, Soapstone, Concrete, Clay, Polymer Clay, Steel, Epoxy Resins, Silicon and Glass.
Especially for traditional forms of Sculpture, sculptors often build small preliminary works which are called maquettes, like initial sketches before a embarking on a painting the maquette serves as a scale model or a guide to then complete the large piece. Maquettes are often made out of simple pliable materials such as clay, plaster, plasticine, polymer clay or wax.
