A sand bag, sometimes referred to as a work-cushion or stability-bag is an important piece of art equipment used by stone sculptors. Commonly they'll be placed on the workbench or banker underneath of the stone being sculpted. They basically provide support and act as a buffer between the stone and the workbench helping to absorb heavy hammering, chiselling or pounding whilst at the same time keeping the stone stable and firmly in one place.
The easiest way to create sand bags for sculpting is to use an old pair of jeans. Sewing the legs and waist openings firmly shut you can insert sand through the zip, they should not be overly filled, instead allow the fabric to easily bend and contour into different curves.
