Rabbit Skin Glue

A rapidly disappearing method for preparing canvas and wood panels for painting. The basic method is as follows: soak the glue overnight then early next day heat until almost boiling but do not boil. 1 - Canvas should be sized with 2 coats of the warm glue, to be followed by an oil ground, traditionally made from White Lead. This proceedure is suitable for oil painting only. 2 - For wood panels the glue is used to make a true gesso. Pour the hot glue into a pot of chalk and mix to the consistency of cream. apply several layers in succession as they dry. It is better to do this in the one day. This process is suitable for tempera as well as oils.
