The making of practical utensils by fashioning wet clay and then baking it hard in an oven. The making of fired clay sculpture is usually referred to as ceramics, while pottery is centered around pots. This ancient craft in the hands of master potters becomes high art of sublime beauty.
There are 2 basic approaches to making pots, hand built and wheel thrown, both with their own unique beauty. Georgia O’Keefe watched a potter working when she was in her 90’s. She became so fascinated by the meditative way of working with the clay that she spent her last years trying to make beautiful pots. In one interview she said she had yet to make the clay ‘speak’ like the potter she had watched. She was trying to though, I hope she succeeded.
