Plan chests are designed for architects, drafts people, and engineers to store plans flat and without folding the plans. This makes them ideal for artists to store drawings in. They usually have several large but shallow drawers on rollers for easy opening. The best ones are made of metal as it is easier to minimise infestation by insects, or damage from moisture and mould.
The plan chest has 2 disadvantages, because they are large and made of steel they tend to be cumbersome when moving studio, and they are not cheap, although they do tend to last a lifetime once you have one.
