Inexpensive prints made from a variety of sources on special photocopying machines. Although not so suitable as a fine arts medium the photocopier is an important tool for the artist. There is the obvious role in collecting resource materials of all types, pictures and text from books for instance.
It also has a more direct role in the creative process. Colors for a picture may be worked out on several photocopies of the drawing without harming the drawing and in less time than making hand drawn copies. It is also easy to scale up or down images using zoom functions, and it is simple to cut and collage material and use the photocopier to end up with a ‘unified’ copy. Full tone images can be posterised easily using contrast controls. And copying onto transparent sheets enables the projection of small images to large size using overhead projectors.
