Old Masters

The great artists from the time before the 19th century are referred to as the old masters. It was the romantic movement that ushered in art practices that we recognise as being more like us than the Renaissance. Artists like Constable, Turner, Rodin, Manet, Van Gogh, Cezanne and other 19th century greats had values very akin to ours. Prior to that time artistic ways (with exceptions of course) were more obviously tied directly to the Renaissance and to moral and other values foreign to many modern artists. During this time skill levels were often of a very high order and aristocratic patrons were at times prepared to pay for extraordinary flights of fancy. Our modern sense of independence would often have been out of place as artists were often integrated into the personal visions of rulers and were often used as expressions of power political as well as cultural.
