Mummy

This brown color was very popular for many years prior to the 20th century. It was literally the pulverised remains of Egyptian mummies. That this deplorable practice no doubt lead to the loss of irreplaceable history and artifacts, as well as the desecration of dead bodies seemed not to bother the many artists who thought it gave an old master look to pictures. Its use was discontinued when the origin of the color became known to the general public. The color was not particularly permanent.
