Mica is the name given to naturally occurring minerals mined from the earth which can be split into extremely small flat surfaced fragments. For this reason mica particles are often very reflective and with movement of light mica powder will sparkle.
Mica is used extensively in the production of pigments, including artists paints. Artists paints that use mica are often called opalescent or iridescent. They can be used quite creatively to capture light and reflect light.
WARNING: Mica powder can easily become air-born and it may cause damage to your lungs if it inhaled. A breathing mask should always be worn when using mica powder or dry mice pigments.
Art Making Tip: Australian artist Brad Buchel uses semi-transparent mica paints applied with-in layers of apoxy resin to create contemporary paintings that change color intensity and hue depending on the angle and the conditions in which the painting is viewed. Try this technique for yourself.
