There are many types of beautiful Japanese papers characterised by attention to texture and a balance between lightness and strength. The traditional fibers are Kozo (mulberry) very long fibers and very durable. Mitsumata, softer more absorbent, delicate, and Gampi. Papers made from Gampi are so strong they are almost like cloth. It is nonabsorbent and resistant to insect damage. It makes a lustrous paper due to the shiny nature of the fibers. Japanese papers are very suitable for any artistic impulse but are often hard to find except in specialist paper or calligraphy shops.
