Gold Leaf is extremely thin sheets of gold so thin that they weigh less and are more fragile than tissue paper. The leaves are commonly sold in the form of small books that contain 25 sheets and are 100mm square, gold leaf comes in 23, 18 and 16 carat.
Because of the unique properties of gold it is possible to get the gold so thin that the human breath is capable of making it disintegrate. Gold Leaf, ( and other forms of Metal Leaf) is created by beating and rolling the metal to approximately 1/300,000th of an inch thickness, this works out to be about 70 sheets to the gram.
Gold Leaf is applied to surfaces in a process called gilding. As a decorative art, gilding is very popular and has been practiced for centuries, often wood carvings are gilded to give the appearance of being a sold gold statue. Gold leaf never loses its shine or corrodes, even after hundreds of years.
