Gesso is used for surface preparation, primarily it is used when painting. It essentially seals the foundation, such as wood or canvas and provides a smooth, 'toothy' surface to which the paint will adhere nicely.
Besides being used prior to Oil Painting and Acrylic Painting, Gesso is sometimes used for applications such as gilding and decoupage.
1 - Gesso: Traditionally Gesso is a material made from hide glue, mixed with powered chalk as a preparation for wood panels.
2 - Acrylic Gesso: Today, Acrylic Gesso is the most common form of gesso you will find, it is a modern adaptation that shares the same name. Acrylic gesso is normally a mixture of acrylic resin and Titanium White. Some of the best brands also contain calcite which is a modern synthetic chalk.
Gesso is made by Paint Manufacturers and can be purchased in tubs of varying volumes from 500ml to 4 litre and more at any art supply stores.
