The most difficult but the best way of making murals. Michelangelo’s frescos are as vibrant as the day he finished them. and short of major earthquakes they will last for centuries more. Each morning the colors are prepared first each with a brush ready for painting. The wall has been previously prepared with first plaster layers, but now a top coat of mortar is applied, just enough for the days work. The mortar is alkaline so only certain pigments that can survive this are used. The colors are rapidly applied while the plaster is wet. they will form a chemical bond with the lime as it sets and will literally become part of the masonry, not a surface coating that can crack or come off, but a permanent part of the wall or ceiling.
