Fading

When colors loose their color and become paler due to the action of light. This can happen in a surprisingly short period of time and some mediums, especially watercolors and prints are especially prone to it. Most colors fade more quickly when mixed with white than in mass tone. Much dishonesty in selling colors over the years has come from selective giving of information about light fastness by companies in this regard. For example Alizarin Crimson was claimed for many years to be durable based on mass tone lightfastness tests yet it was discovered to be vastly inferior in the sort of tints it was normally used in. Always choose colors of ASTM class 1 or 2 and if the manufacturer includes Woolscale test results (usually 3 numbers separated by colons) then check the last number as that is the test at 5% in white and is very revealing of the color’s resistance to fading.
