Many kinds of pencils are colored but this term is usually applied to wax based colored pencils mostly for children or craft that are weak and not pleasant to use, although there are some on the market designed for serious artists and available in a wide range of colors. Even the best colored pencils tend to be weak in coloring when compared to other materials and seems to be due to the ingredient proportions needed to make the pencil. Colored pencils are mostly used by illustrators as they suit the needs of the publishing industry.
Some colored pencils are water soluble and called Aquarelles. These are generally the most interesting of the colored pencils for artists.
Not usually referred to as colored pencils are the hard chalk pencils often called by proprietary brand names such as Conte, Pitt or Cretacolor which are highly useful drawing materials giving the powerful results many artists prefer.
