A form of printmaking and aquatint is a method of working an etching to achieve wash-like tonal effects. Powdered rosin is sprinkled on the etching plate then heated until the rosin melts and adheres to the metal. Selectively using a special varnish on the plate before placing in the acid produces the surface that will hold ink as various surface tones.
