Agents are not for everyone, however they can be a useful way of building a career in some circumstances. Artists agents arrange exhibitions, publicity, and mold image as necessary. They are essential in the world of music and theatre, where stardom can easily be instant and directors and producers find talent by approaching well known agents. In the fine arts world careers usually build more slowly which is less attractive to the agent as a means to their own income. On the other hand instant celebrity can happen. A past student of mine Sid Chidiac discovered this when he started painting in chocolate. Now he paints portraits of high profile figures all over the world and in 2005 had 14 exhibitions in places like Paris, London, and New York. Sid may well benefit from an agents organisational skills.
